Develop & Consolidate

Building independence, fluency and responsibility with a focus on deeper thinking and wellbeing.

Middle School

In the Middle School area, the focus shifts toward bridging the foundational skills of the early years with the greater autonomy required for future learning. In Years 3 and 4, we place a strong emphasis on consolidating core learning, ensuring our students move from learning to read and calculate to reading and calculating to learn. We actively cultivate academic fluency alongside deep, critical thinking, encouraging students to question, analyse, and look beyond the surface of their subjects.

Simultaneously, this stage is a pivotal time for personal growth; we explicitly guide students to build independence and take greater responsibility for their own learning and organisation. Nurtured by a continued focus on wellbeing, our Middle School learning environment ensures students feel safe to take academic risks, collaborate effectively and develop the self-belief needed to thrive as capable, independent learners.

Beyond the Classroom

At St Roch’s, we believe that learning extends far beyond the four walls of the classroom. Our vibrant "Beyond the Classroom" program is designed to spark curiosity, uncover hidden talents, and foster a lifelong love of learning. Through a diverse range of lunchtime and after-school initiatives—including Dance, Chess, Library, Run, Art, and STEM Clubs—students are given the freedom to explore their unique passions and connect with like-minded peers in a relaxed, fun environment.

We also place a strong emphasis on active living, real-world experiences, and academic challenges. Our comprehensive physical education and team-building offerings include a dedicated Swimming Program and energetic Sport Gala Days. Academically, students can benchmark their skills globally through the prestigious ICAS Assessments, while regular excursions and incursions bring the curriculum to life. A true highlight of the middle school journey is our Year 4 Overnight Camp to Sovereign Hill, where history comes alive and students build lasting independence, resilience and unforgettable memories together.

Wellbeing

We recognise that to demonstrate positive behaviour, students first need the emotional skills to manage themselves. That is why our Social and Emotional Learning curriculum is the heartbeat of our Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) framework.
By explicitly teaching the five competencies—such as Self-Management and Responsible Decision-Making—we provide students with the internal toolkit they need to meet our school-wide PBL expectations. This synergy ensures a consistent and supportive environment where students understand not just how to behave, but why it matters, leading to a safer and more productive classroom for everyone.
